What is a waterfall chart for?
Showing how you got from one number to another — last quarter's revenue to this quarter's — as a series of additions and subtractions. It answers 'why did it change' rather than 'what is it'.
What's a revenue bridge?
A waterfall applied to revenue, typically broken into new, expansion, contraction and churn. It's the standard way to explain a revenue movement to a board, because it separates growth from retention.
How many steps should a waterfall have?
Five to eight. Beyond that the bars get too small to read and the chart stops being an explanation — group the small movements into an 'other' bar instead.
