Common questions

How do I calculate month-over-month growth?

(This month − last month) ÷ last month, as a percentage. Compounding those monthly rates rather than adding them is what gives you the annual figure.

Should I use MoM or YoY?

Both, for different jobs. MoM catches recent changes quickly but is distorted by seasonality; YoY controls for seasonality but is slow to reveal a turn. Reading them together is the point.

Why does my growth rate swing so much?

Small denominators and month-length effects. A month with 20 working days against one with 23 will show growth that is purely calendar. A three-month moving average usually settles it.
