Common questions

What does a correlation coefficient actually mean?

It measures how tightly two columns move together, from -1 to 1. Above about 0.7 or below -0.7 is a strong relationship; near zero means no *linear* relationship, which is not the same as no relationship at all.

Does correlation mean one thing causes the other?

No. Two columns can move together because one drives the other, because something else drives both, or by coincidence across a small sample. A matrix tells you where to look, not what to conclude.

How much data do I need for this to be meaningful?

At least 30 rows before a coefficient means much, and considerably more if you're comparing many columns at once — test enough pairs and some will look strong purely by chance.
