Common questions
What is a pivot table used for?
Summarising a long table by category — total sales by region and month, say — without writing a formula. It's the fastest way to answer 'what does this add up to, broken down by...'.
Why does my pivot table show counts instead of sums?
The value column is being read as text, almost always because of a stray currency symbol, a thousands separator or a blank that isn't really blank. Fix the column type and it aggregates properly.
Can I pivot on a date by month or quarter?
Yes — dates group by day, month, quarter or year, so a two-year transaction list becomes a readable monthly summary in one step.
