Common questions
What is a Pareto chart?
Bars ranked largest to smallest with a cumulative percentage line over the top. Where that line crosses 80% tells you how few categories account for most of the total.
Is it always exactly 80/20?
No. 80/20 is a rule of thumb, not a law — real distributions land anywhere from 90/10 to 60/40. The chart's value is measuring your actual split rather than assuming one.
What can I use it for?
Anything with a long tail of categories: revenue by customer, defects by cause, support tickets by type, stock by value. It's the standard way to decide where a limited amount of attention should go.
