Common questions

How far ahead should a roadmap go?

Four quarters, with confidence dropping sharply after the second. Roadmaps that show precise dates 18 months out get treated as commitments and then get held against you.

Should a roadmap show dates or themes?

Near-term work can carry dates because it's scoped; further-out work is better expressed as themes or quarters. Mixing both in one view — precise near, coarse far — is the honest version.

How is this different from the project Gantt?

Same timeline engine, different altitude. The roadmap plots initiatives and owners across quarters for a stakeholder audience; the Gantt plots individual tasks and dependencies for the team doing the work.
