Common questions
How do I add a cumulative column?
Sort by the column that defines the order — usually a date — then accumulate. The sort matters more than the arithmetic: a running total on unsorted rows is a meaningless number that still looks plausible.
Can the total reset per group?
Yes. Reset per customer, per month or per category and each group gets its own running total, which is what you want for a year-to-date column that starts again each January.
What's the difference between a running total and a moving average?
A running total accumulates everything so far and only ever grows. A moving average covers a fixed recent window and rises and falls — it's for smoothing a trend, not for measuring cumulative progress.
