What is cohort retention analysis?

Cohort retention groups customers by when they first arrived (the "acquisition cohort") and then measures what fraction stay active at month 1, month 3, month 12. It separates "new growth" from "keeping existing customers around" — two metrics that look the same in a single revenue number but tell completely different stories.

Why it matters

What the heatmap shows

How this calculator differs from Mixpanel / Amplitude

Mixpanel and Amplitude have polished cohort UIs but charge $79+/month and require event tracking integration. This calculator works on the data you already have — a CSV with customer ID + date — and runs in your browser with no signup. For more advanced cohort analyses (segmentation, predictive churn, multi-event funnels), the full DataHub Pro platform handles them at from $14.99/mo.

Limits of this calculator

Want segmentation, churn risk, and forecasted retention?

The full DataHub Pro platform layers RFM, churn risk modelling, and Holt-Winters forecasting on top of cohort retention. from $14.99/mo, free tier first.

Frequently asked questions

Is the cohort retention tool really free?
Yes — completely free, no signup, runs entirely in your browser. Your data never leaves the tab.
What data format does it expect?
Two columns: customer_id and a date (signup or any transaction date). One row per event. Paste from Excel or use the sample data button to see the format.
What's the difference between logo retention and revenue retention?
Logo retention counts customers; revenue retention sums transaction value. Both are built into the tool — toggle between them with the buttons. For SaaS, net revenue retention (NRR) is the more important metric.
How many cohorts can it handle?
Tested up to 500 cohorts with 50,000+ customers. Larger datasets work but the heatmap becomes hard to read; use DataHub Pro's full product for serious cohort work at scale.
Can I export the cohort table?
Yes — CSV download of the full cohort retention matrix.
