Common questions
What is a cohort analysis and why use one?
It groups customers by when they joined and tracks each group separately over time. Blended retention hides the trend, because a flood of new signups can make overall churn look fine while every individual cohort is getting worse.
How do I read a retention triangle?
Each row is a joining cohort, each column is months since joining. Read across a row for one cohort's decay, and down a column to compare cohorts at the same age — that comparison is where you see whether retention is improving.
What retention curve is healthy?
It should flatten. A curve that keeps falling toward zero means no durable segment exists; one that levels off — even at 40% — means you've found customers who stay, and the job becomes acquiring more of them.
