Common questions

What's the difference between a P&L and a cash-flow statement?

A P&L records revenue and costs when they are earned or incurred; cash flow records money actually moving. A profitable month on the P&L can still be a cash-negative month if customers haven't paid yet.

How many months should I keep in one P&L?

Twelve, so you can see seasonality and compare any month to the same month last year. Rolling twelve months is more useful than a calendar year that resets every January.

Do I need an accountant to use this?

No. The template uses plain categories and computes the subtotals for you. It is a management P&L for running the business, not a statutory one for filing.
